Dunedin
is a nice little sleepy town on the southern part of the Southern Island.
There was a beautiful park-like square in the center of the city. Milford
Sound, which is on the West Coast of the southern part of the Southern
Island is a fiord-like area. It is a photographer's dream.We arrived at
Milfor Sound on a very sunny calm day.....an unusual event in this area
that gets approximately 300 inches of rain per year. |

Donna again trying some
of the exotic local fair. Notice Donna's new pants. She found them in
the children's dept. of "Just Jeans". How cool!!! |
The town square is shaped like an
octagon and is known as ...Guess what? ....Yep ..."The Octagon". |
British influence is everywhere. |
Milford Sound was not
discovered for a very long time after the first Europeans landed in New
Zealand because it's entrance is very small and difficult to see from
off-shore. Here is a view of it from about three miles out. |
The New Zealand Coast in this area
is very rugged with a considerable amount of harsh weather. |
Once into Milford Sound the water
calmed and scenery improved. |
Many tourists interested
in environmental issues come here on vacation and cruise these waters
in many different types of boats. |
This area is at the southern tip
of what is known as the Southern Alps. |
The views were very beautiful. |
Quite beautiful. |
Because the water is
very deep the ship was able to get very close to the sides of the canyon-like
area. |
|
What can
you say.... Just beautiful!!!! |
When we left, just outside of Milford
Sound and at the beginning of our journey across the Tasman Sea, we were
met by a 70 knot gale and the associated high seas and swells. The ship
was really rocking and rolling. That night we experienced the worst sea
conditions we had ever encountered. |
