THE GREAT FLOOD OF 2003
The morning before our arrival in Belem, we had a little surprise. At about 4 AM I got out of bed to go to the bathroom and when I stood up I found myself standing barefoot on a soaking wet carpet. It seems the room next to ours was given to one of the Brazilian immigration officials who subsequently threw a few back that night at the bar and went to sleep dead drunk with the bath running. The ship's night staff was wonderful and there was a team of about 7 with wet-vacs, drying fans and towels to try to stem the tide which moved about the cabin a little as the ship rolled and pitched. We were very lucky the night before we had taken almost all of the articles we had purchased during the trip and placed them on our couch in order to facilitate packing for the trip home. Until then these were stored on the floor and much would have been ruined. Lucky, Lucky, Lucky!!!!! Radisson moved us into a larger room which, allowed us to spread out our belongings which, had been horridly stuffed into bags for our escape to higher ground.
As soon as Donna realized that her new shoes were safe she thought the whole thing quite entertaining. There were only a few things which really got soaked. The worst of it was we had to pack, move and then unpack everything. This little excersise took most of the day and the next day I was still exhausted.
